Attention Deficit Disorder in Adults

What is Attention Deficit Disorder?

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD) is a neurobiological condition that consists of symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity interfere with an individual’s functioning.  While symptoms are evident in childhood, many adults never received a thorough assessment or treatment. A recent study found that 4.4% of adults in the United States meet the criteria for a diagnosis of attention deficit disorder, yet fewer than 11% of these adults receive treatment.

Symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder

Attention deficit disorder symptoms in adults are often quite different than they are in children.  As we get older, the symptoms of adult ADD/ADHD can have serious consequences in terms of employment, relationships and social expectations.  Common symptoms include:

*Trouble concentrating and staying focused

*Disorganization

*Forgetfulness

*Impulsiveness

*Emotional difficulties

*Difficulties with lack of motivation

*Hyperactivity or restlessness

What is Normal & What is Attention Deficit?

Almost everyone has some symptoms similar to ADD/ADHD at some point in their lives. If your difficulties are recent or occurred only occasionally in the past, you probably don’t have attention deficit disorder. ADHD is diagnosed only when symptoms are severe enough to cause ongoing problems in more than one area of your life. These persistent and disruptive symptoms can be traced back to early childhood.

Diagnosis of ADHD in adults can be difficult because certain ADHD symptoms are similar to those caused by other conditions, such as executive dysfunction, anxiety, and mood disorders.
